EASTLEIGH will be hoping to succeed where tomorrow night's National League opponents Dover Athletic failed in next month’s FA Cup second round.

The Spitfires’ reward for Saturday’s history-making 1-0 win over League One outfit Crewe Alexandra is a trip to Dover’s conquerors Stourbridge of the Northern Premier League.

Currently ninth in the table, the Glassboys from the West Midlands ran out worthy 2-1 winners at Dover’s Crabble on Saturday with beaten manager Chris Kinnear admitting “they were the better side.”

While many along this end of the M27 will have been hoping for an Eastleigh versus Portsmouth match-up, that possibility went out of the window when Paul Cook’s men were drawn at home to Accrington Stanley.

Eastleigh’s name came out just three balls after the Fratton Park outfit and, at present, theirs is the only tie that guarantees a non-League side going through to round three, although that could change after next week’s replays.

Spitfires boss Chris Todd, who attended the BBC2-televised draw with Saturday’s match-winner Ben Strevens, declared himself “quite pleased” to get two leagues lower Stourbridge away.

“It’s a game that’s winnable,” he said. “It’s difficult whoever you play, but we’ll give it our best shot and try to get through to the third round.”

Stourbridge took just eight minutes to take the lead at Dover when Chris Lait beat Mitch Walker in the home goal.

Aswad Thomas, who trialled with Eastleigh during the summer, pulled the Kent club level before Dover keeper Walker received a second yellow card for bringing down Glassboys’ Karl Hawley.

Hawley beat sub keeper Andy Rafferty from the penalty spot as Stourbridge claimed their second Vanarama National League scalp in quick succession having already disposed of Kidderminster Harriers.

Stourbridge boss Gary Hackett, a former West Bromwich Albion winger, said of the Dover win: “We didn’t just come here and nick it, we fully deserved to win it.

“Dover are a very physical side but the better football was played by ourselves.”

Stourbridge have forged something of a Cup tradition in recent seasons. Saturday’s was their fourth appearance in the first round in seven years.
