EASTLEIGH boss Ronnie Moore is debating whether to pair one central defensive colossus with another at home to Chester on Saturday (3pm).

New 6ft 2in powerhouse Bondz N’Gala is a shoo-in for selection after impressing on his debut in Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Aldershot.

Moore’s dilemma is whether to stick with Connor Essam alongside him or bring back his other defensive titan, 6ft 3in Reda Johnson, who was suspended for the Shots game.

One thing the boss is sure of is that the Spitfires are blessed with two of the most awesomely-built defenders in the National League.

He said: “Reda and Bondz are already good mates so they’ve obviously met previously (at Plymouth Argyle).

“They’re both big and strong. Reda’s just a bit taller, but Bondz is broader.

“If you’re a centre-forward they’re going to frighten the life out of you! They’ve got that aura about them.”

N’Gala, signed from League Two Barnet this week, didn’t come cheap. The Bees revealed on their official website that Eastleigh’s record signing cost a cool £60,000.

Tuesday’s evidence suggests it's money well spent.

“The chairman (Stewart Donald) has done well to allow him in,” said Moore.

“If we want to get out of this league we’ve got to try and bring in better than we’ve already got and Bondz is in that category. He’s given up League football to come here. We need winners like him.

“Bondz has come here to play, not to sit on the bench, Connor’s done well, Reda’s available, Adam Dugdale’s only a week or so from being fit and we’ve got Ayo (Obileye) as well, so we’ll be back to five centre-halves. I have to make a decision who plays, but it’s nice to have those problems.”

Eastleigh’s new goalkeeper Scott Brown, on loan from Wycombe Wanderers, also had a competent debut. His arrival is a relief to Moore who has confirmed that Spitfires No1 Ryan Clarke faces up to ten weeks out with a tendon problem in his elbow.

“Ryan pushed his arm out to make a save in training and the pressure of the ball caused a freak injury, “ said the boss. “It’s a good job we’ve got Browner in with a bit of League experience.

“He was confident in what he did at Aldershot, but it was a scrappy, horrible game.

“We go to Swindon and play like Barcelona, go to Gateshead and play like The Dog ‘n’ Duck and at Aldershot we dug deep to get a result.”

Midfielder Andy Drury is rated 60-40 to play after hamstring trouble as eighth-placed Eastleigh bid to narrow the six-point gap on fifth spot.

Draw specialists Chester, 12th, are without a win in six league games but Moore stressed: “We’re not thinking this is going to be a gimme.

"Chester are a lot better than last season (when they finished 17th). They’re nice and strong and athletic and we’ve got to be at our best."
