THE Northern League, a well established and respected footballing community in the North-East, has rightly set high standards for clubs competing for regional and national honours.

However, the management of the league appears to have set double standards for teams competing within the league.

I highlight the punishment handed out to Ryhope CW, who have been relegated to the Wearside League. They are the latest team to have encountered financial difficulties and so have been unable to meet the ground improvements required by the league.

In recent years, Spennymoor, Bishop Auckland, Whitley Bay and Darlington have been accepted to the league after relegation and financial mismanagement – Auckland and Darlington didn’t even have a ground of their own, let alone meeting league criteria.
