FORMER Salisbury City hero Matt Tubbs could be making his farewell appearance for AFC Wimbledon tonight – live on BBC against Liverpool in the FA Cup.

The 30-year-old striker is on a season-long loan from AFC Bournemouth, and is currently the top scorer in League 2 with 15 league and cup goals.

But Tubbs, a former lifeguard at Sandy Balls holiday centre near Fordingbridge who scored over a century of goals for home-town club Salisbury, has a January break clause in the terms of the agreement with the Cherries.

Portsmouth are among the clubs keen to sign Tubbs permanentlly and Wimbledon have reacted by tempting Tubbs with a lucrative contract.

Boss Neal Ardley said: “We’ve offered Matt Tubbs what, for us, is an incredible contract.

“We’ve done everything in our powers to keep him.

“Matt’s got a decision to make. He could stay on the current loan deal he’s on now, but we’ve offered him the option of a permanent move if he wanted to leave Bournemouth.”

Tonight’s tie represents the first time the Dons have reached the FA Cup third round since their rebirth in 2002.

The Kingsmeadow encounter brings with it memories of the most famous day in Wimbledon’s history, when the Crazy Gang shocked the Merseyside behemoths to win the FA Cup in 1988.

Lawrie Sanchez scored the decisive goal at Wembley that day, although captain Dave Beasant's save from a John Aldridge penalty remains the iconic image.

Ex-Saints keeper Beasant will be among the crowd at Kingsmeadow tonight.
