Sutherland Road is ready for England match
7:40am Tuesday 15th June 2010 in News
COME ON ENGLAND!: Residents of Sutherland Road in Lordshill. Echo picture by Richard Simpson. Order no: 10592936
A WHOLE street is coming together to watch England’s bid to win the World Cup.
Families in Sutherland Road, Lordshill, Southampton, have put out the bunting and flags in style as they gear up for Friday’s crunch match with Algeria in Cape Town.
Almost all the 13 houses are flying the St George’s flag.
The neighbours got together for a barbecue before Saturday’s first game with the USA before watching the 1-1 draw in Rustenburg.
Karen and Julian Shears have lived on the street for almost 30 years.
Karen, 54, a health worker, said: “We love football and we’ve got a great community spirit in our little close. It looks absolutely fantastic and we’re ready, we’re up for it and we’re going to see England win the World Cup.”

I wish that people wouldnt hold or fly the English flag, or more commonly the Union Flag upside down, or drag it on the deck. It is so disrespectful.

What is wrong with these people showing their support for their country's national team in a tournament that comes round every four years. They are enjoying themselves as a community for the next 3 - 4 weeks. What is life for if not for enjoying your passions once in a while.
I've seen the mad OTT area, I can just about see it from where I live, looks very unattractive. Myself and my other half saw it the other day and went OMG how sad, have they not got anything else better to do.

Have any of you done anything so worthwhile to promote neighbourliness recently? Thought not!

How on earth can you assume that the residents of Sutherland Road do not have jobs? You really are so judgmental with nothing at all to base your opinion on. I guess you are also one of those that assume that all criminals are from one parent families and all the people in council accommodation are chavs. You should join the real world, I am sure it is a better place than your bigoted one!!
As for the criminals / single parent family and chav thing - not all but statistics don't lie you know.

Wouldn't it be a better use of their time to look for jobs rather that hang tacky decorations and watch pointless football matches ? Makes my blood boil !

As for dragging the nation's flags on the floor, I find that really disrespectful. I was just making a generic point, not suggesting that the good residents of Lordshill would do such a thing.

.
I think the orientaion of said flags is often due to the size of the aperture it is being hung from. Maybe all citizens should be given the option of a free flag pole from which to hang such items (and maybe their own crest/coat of arms) during such events.
