Portsmouth’s nosedive from the Premier League to League 2 within three wretched years was completed last night.

Oldham's 1-0 win over Yeovil condemned Pompey to a third relegation in four seasons.

The latest drop is the culmination of a harrowing few seasons for Saints’ arch rivals who were in the Premier League just three years ago and won the FA Cup in 2008.

That period has also seen the club go into administration twice but the Pompey Supporter's Trust were given the green light to take over the club last week and they will look to guide the club back from the fourth tier.

Matt Smith scored the only goal at Boundary Park as Oldham boss Lee Johnson secured bragging points over his father Gary in the Yeovil dugout.

The striker netted on the stroke of half-time to move the Latics five points clear of the drop zone with a game in hand over Colchester and Scunthorpe, who occupy 21st.

Having been FA Cup winners just five years ago, Pompey now find themselves back below Saints, Brighton and Bournemouth in the pecking order of South Coast football.

However, Portsmouth will be able to look forward to a Hampshire derby, provided Aldershot can pull of a great escape and avoid relegation from League 2.

It is likely Pompey will begin life in English football's fourth tier on a minus points total.

When they come out of administration, the Football League will impose a points deduction upon the club, but with the team already relegated it is most likely that will be pushed to next season rather than this, as was the case when Saints suffered a ten point deduction in 2009.
