BLACKFIELD & Langley have wasted no time flushing their FA Vase defeat at Bemerton out of their system.

The Watersiders burst out of the blocks to go 3-0 up inside 12 minutes against Romsey Town in the Sydenhams Premier Division on Saturday, writes Wendy Gee.

By the half-hour mark, they were 5-0 up and cruising at their Gang Warily fortress.

Such was B&L’s dominance that manager Ashley Vickers was able to withdraw big guns Kev Gibbens, Ekow Elliott and Alex Baldacchino early in the second half and it was one of the substitutes, Brandon Goodship, who chipped in with arguably the goal-of-the-match in Blackfield’s 6-1 victory.

Goodship has dual-signed for the Watersiders from AFC Bournemouth where he is part of the development squad.

Blackfield co-assistant manager Glenn Burnett said: “I know (Cherries youth manager) Paul Groves well from my time at New Milton last season when we had three young Bournemouth lads with us.

“He said to me that Brandon’s one of the most natural finishers he’s seen at that age and, if he gets a half chance, he’ll take.

“I don’t think his goal on Saturday was even a half chance. He was 25 yards out, side-stepped a player and just smashed it.

“About five minutes earlier he’d hit a shot with such power and bend that it just missed the top corner.”

Also making his debut for Blackfield was quality new signing Leigh Mills from Eastleigh, a rock at centre-back.

It was all too much for relegation-battling Romsey, who had gone into the game buoyed by seven points from their previous three outings.

Baldacchino quickly prised open the floodgates, converting a cross by man-of-the-match Elliott.

Right-back Joe Byrne added the second before Baldacchino struck again from the penalty spot. Elliott and Gibbens put the result beyond doubt with just 30 minutes gone.

“Even at 5-0 up, we still played some really good football,” said Burnett. “Romsey came into the game in good form and probably fancied it, but we knocked the stuffing out of them early.

“The FA Vase has gone now. We spoke about it once in training, but that was that.

“Our mentality is that we might lose the odd game, but don’t lose two in a row.”

Blackfield are up to seventh, eight points behind new league leaders Alresford with six games in hand.

Tonight they host second-placed Downton looking to avenge the 4-0 drubbing they suffered at the Robins’ hands on the opening day of the season.

“They gave us a right walloping that day, but we’ve beaten them since 1-0 in the FA Cup at our place,” said Burnett.

“Downton are a good team, but we’ve got a nice, big pitch and our fitness levels are exceptional.” Third-to-bottom Romsey have another tough assignment tonight at sixth-placed Moneyfields.
