LAST term’s beaten FA Trophy finalists Gosport Borough will go into today’s second round hat, but they have yet to secure their place.

Alex Pike’s men will host a replay at Privett Park on Tuesday after drawing 2-2 at Conference South rivals Basingstoke Town yesterday.

Justin Bennett buried both Borough goals, first striking from the penalty spot following Nathan Smart’s foul on his frontline partner Matt Paterson after Brett Poate’s own goal had gifted Stoke an early lead.

Basingstoke regained the upper hand through sub Lloyd Macklin with 12 minutes remaining – much to the fury of Borough’s players who were convinced Louie Soares had handled the ball in the build-up.

They put that anger to good use, however, levelling four minutes later when sub Adam Wilde delivered a free kick expertly from the right for Bennett to head home.

Bennett, Borough’s all-time leading marksman, was replaced late on by lively ex-Sholing forward Lee Wort who came close to a winner when Paterson’s low delivery just evaded him. Havant & Waterlooville also face a home replay tomorrow following a 1-1 draw at ten-man Weymouth.

Jason Matthews’ Terras were handicapped by Jamie Laird’s 28th-minute dismissal for a professional foul on Nic Ciardini.

But, despite falling behind to a Bradley Bubb goal on the hour, the ten-man Southern Premier underdogs replied four minutes later through George Rigg.

Both sides could have won it in a thrilling finale with Havant’s ex-Eastleigh striker Ben Wright forcing a great save out of player-boss Matthews and H&W stopper Ryan Long denying Weymouth’s Adam Kelly.

Jack Maloney gave Poole Town a 43rd-minute lead at Conference South side Maidenhead but, despite hitting the woodwork twice and forcing a goalmouth clearance in a strong start to the second half, Tom Killick’s men went down 2-1 as Devante McKain and Dave Tarpey turned the tie around.
