TEAM Solent are within touching distance of the Sydenhams One title following Saturday’s 6-0 home pummelling of Pewsey Vale.

The Southampton Solent University team turned on the style with goals from Jermal Frederick, Jesse Lassen, Glodi Nakanda, Matt Sheedy, Rafa Da Costa and substitute Chris Wateridge to power ten points clear at the top.

While the Students are approaching the finish line at full pelt, winning four league games on the bounce, their rivals have been stuttering down the home straight.

Amesbury Town have fallen away, while second-placed Tadley Calleva slipped up 2-0 at home to Downton on Saturday.

Third-placed Cowes Sports are flying, but they are 13 points behind Team Solent with three games in hand.

“We’ve got three games to go and, if we win two, we’ve definitely won the league,” said Solent boss James Taylor (below).

“We’ve opened a good gap now and I think that’s because some of the other clubs have lost some strange games while we’ve carried on winning. We’ve played well in our last few.”

Having been in caretaker charge for much of the season, ex-Havant & Waterlooville and AFC Totton targetman Taylor has finally had his position confirmed.

“I’m all sorted for another year and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “We’ve just got to make sure we finish off this season well.

“Losing our first three games was difficult, but to go on from there and finish it off with promotion would be a really good effort.”

Solent also have the Southampton Senior Cup final to look forward to against Hamble Club at St Mary’s on April 29.
