GRAHAM Kemp isn’t banking on having “enigma” Joe Sanger in his Bemerton Heath Harlequins side next season – but he hasn’t entirely ruled it out either.

Two seasons ago, Sanger’s formidable partnership with Heath skipper Jack Slade made them one of the most feared frontline pairings in the Sydenhams Wessex top flight.

But Sanger took a lengthy spell out of the game in 2012/13 – and an even longer one last season – and there is no knowing if and when the home-grown Harlequins frontman will get his appetite back for football.

Kemp, a relative newcomer to Western Way having succeeded Ian Chalk towards the end of last season, said: “I’ve spoken to Joe but, as everyone knows, he’s an enigma and nothing I say or do would make his mind up for him.

“My best chance of getting him back is to make us as competitive as I can.

“I’ve dropped Joe the odd text and he knows where we are.

“I’d love to have him here and, if we get off to a good start next season, maybe there’s a small chance he’ll come back.

“He’s still around and he lives locally. In fact he’s here at most Saturday home games.

“But, from what I’m told, he got a bit despondent with some of the refereeing.

“Some of it he brought on himself, so it’s not all one-way, but there were times when his reputation preceded him.”
