TOTTON & Eling have no idea if Winchester City’s mid-summer promotion to the Southern League will spare them relegation from the Sydenhams Premier Division.

The Wessex constitution is due to be ratified at tonight’s (Tuesday’s) AGM and Millers chairman/co-boss Andy Tipp will attend with a completely open mind.

After finishing second in a three-way battle to avoid the drop with Christchurch and escapees Fareham Town, T&E would be first in line for a reprieve if one were handed out.

But Tipp said: “No one’s said anything to me either way and I honestly don’t know if they would bother to keep us up.

“We’re a bit behind in getting our ground up together and I think they will probably opt to run with 21 teams in the Premier Division this season.

“But if there was a chance of staying up, we would definitely take it.

“All the players from last season have signed on and, as long as we keep them fit and we avoid starting as badly as we did last year, I think we would do okay.

“But at the end of the day, it’s not our decision. It’s totally up to the league how many teams they run with and we’ll take whatever they throw at us.

“They’ve said all along that two would go down and we can’t argue with that.

“The league have been very fair to us on many occasions, so we’ll just take their decision on the chin, whatever it may be.

“Of course we’d love to be a Premier Division club, but we won't be bitter and twisted about it either way.”

Wishing Winchester all the very best back in the Southern One South & West, Tipp said: “We had a good relationship with them last season and I’ve texted (director of football) Dave Malone to wish them luck.

“Even without Winchester, it’s going to be a very good Wessex Premier this season. Salisbury being in there will give everyone a big pay day at home and it will be great to go and play at their ground.

“I took my son there to play in a six-a-side tournament and the pitch is lovely.”
