WINCHESTER City have a couple of unwanted injury headaches for Saturday's FA Cup second qualifying round tie at home to Maidenhead United.

Last night's 5-1 Hampshire FA Senior Cup win over Folland Sports proved costly for the Citizens with frontman Zach Glasspool hobbling off with a dead calf before full-back Danny King exited with a tight hamstring.

“Zach should be okay, but Kinger’s a worry,” said manager Paul Masters. “He went off with 20 minutes to go and we had to play on with ten men because I’d already used three subs.”

Experienced defender Jake Newton is definitely out. It’s a massive blow for City who could have done with the 31-year-old’s higher league experience against a Maidenhead side who, under the guidance of ex-West Ham and England midfielder Alan Devonshire, sit ninth in the National League South.

The classy right-back, who made well over 100 appearances for Havant & Waterlooville and has played internationally for Guyana, appeared to have been making good progress from a hamstring injury.

But Newton aggravated it in a run-out for the reserves last Saturday and will play no part on Saturday as Masters’ Southern One South & West new boys look to match last year’s feat of reaching the third qualifying round.

“It’s disappointing, but we’ve only lost one game all year, so spirits are good,” said Masters.

“We’ve had Maidenhead watched and we know enough about them. It won’t change the way we play, but it helps us deal with set-pieces.”

After losing their first three games of September, Maidenhead got back to winning ways last Saturday - ex-Eastleigh striker Ben Wright scoring in a 1-0 win over Chelmsford.

City’s top gun Warren Bentley added another two to his tally against Follands, with Rob Flooks (2) and Jamie Barron also on target.

Saturday’s tie will be the first ever meeting between the clubs.

Magpies boss Devonshire said: “Winchester won 4-0 at Swindon Supermarine to get through to this stage.

“I don’t know what the pitch is going to be like there, but it’s going to be a tough game.”
