BLACKFIELD & Langley must succeed on Saturday where Winchester City so narrowly failed if they are to reach the FA Cup fourth qualifying round for a second time.

Entering the last five minutes at the Denplan City Ground, Winchester were 1-0 up against ten-man Maidenhead United of the National League South.

But with victory seemingly in their grasp, they conceded from a late corner and paid the price in a 4-2 second qualifying round replay defeat at York Road.

Blackfield - managed by former Basingstoke and Poole Town midfielder Glenn Howes - watched that replay and know their one real hope of springing an upset is to make home advantage count.

They have the firepower, having blitzed Southern League Wimborne 6-1 to reach this stage courtesy of Rico Wilson (3), Dan Munday (2) and Jesse Gould.

“We're under no illusions about what Maidenhead are,” said co-assistant boss Chris Farrell. “We don’t play many teams like that in our league.

“They’re big, strong and physical with lots of players who have been around the Conference for quite a few seasons.

“Our one advantage is that we’re at home and one thing we do do at Blackfield is score goals – especially at home.

“Winchester had their chance on the Saturday, but it’s rare to get two chances against a team like that.

“Our chance is on Saturday and we’re going to have to play well because 99 times out 100, they beat us. The bottom line is that if Maidenhead turn up and perform it’s going to be very difficult.

“But it’s not a case of ‘we’ll just enjoy the game’, we’ll go for it. If we get beat, we get beat, but the last thing we want to do is spend the rest of the season thinking: ‘If only we’d had a go.’”

The Watersiders one injury doubt is attacking midfielder Sam Lanahan (meniscus) who was due to see AFC Bournemouth’s physio this week.

Dave Tarpey, the Maidenhead man sent off at Winchester, has had his red card overturned by the FA and will be available for the trip to Gang Warily.

The Magpies’ winger got his marching orders for charging into City midfielder Micky Hubbard “with excessive force” – a decision branded “laughable” by Magpies boss Alan Devonshire, an FA Cup winner with West Ham.

Blackfield’s best Cup run was in their 2012/13 Wessex League-winning season. Having beaten Sholing, they lost 3-0 at Hastings United in the fourth qualifying round.
