SHOLING’S 2014 FA Vase-winning boss Dave Diaper has sounded a note of caution ahead of Saturday’s second round test at Devon-based Buckland Athletic.

Trips to the West Country are fraught with danger – as Blackfield & Langley found to their cost when defeated 6-0 in their delayed first round tie at Plymouth Parkway last weekend.

“I was shocked to hear the Blackfield result. It’s a warning for us,” said Diaper.

“Plymouth Parkway play in the same league as St Austell, who were semi-finalists last year, and I think St Austell are going to be a big test for Salisbury on Saturday.

“Names like Plymouth Parkway and St Austell don’t trip off the tongue that easily, but they’ve come onto the scene strongly in the last couple of years and they’ve got to be looked at as a threat.”

Although Sholing’s reputation goes before them following their triumphant ‘March to the Arch’ two seasons ago, very little of that side remains and Diaper believes they travel to fifth-placed Western Premier side Buckland as underdogs.

“We know it’s going to be a battle but, having won the Vase, we also know it’s not always the best team that wins on the day,” he said.

“While we’re still in the Vase there’s still hope and we’re going into it in good form.”

Sholing made it eight wins on the spin on Wednesday, coming back from behind to beat Horndean 2-1 in the Russell Cotes Cup through a 45-yard, wind-assisted Nick Tayler own goal and Wembley goalscoring hero Marvin McLean.

Sydenhams Premier leaders Salisbury have home advantage over St Austell – plus two new players in the camp.

Following successful trials, the Whites have welcomed wideman Taurean Roberts and midfielder Harry Wedlake into the Old Sarum fold and both are eligible for the Vase.

Londoner Roberts, 24, has played for Totton & Mitcham, Merstham and Met Police in the Ryman League since coming through the Crystal Palace academy, while Wedlake was with Portsmouth as a scholar before joining Havant & Waterlooville of the National League South.

John Pyatt's Lymington Town face a tough away trip to Bristol Manor Farm, current leaders of the Western Premier.
