PORTLAND United manager Gary Bailey was in dreamland on Saturday after his side clinched the Sydenhams One title with three games to spare by thrashing Andover New Street.

A hat-trick from Alex Godfrey and goals from Carl McClements and Lewis Whyton saw the Blues crowned champions at the first time of asking since returning to the Wessex ranks last summer from the Dorset Premier League.

Victory capped a hectic week for Portland who had won four games in seven days to take the title.

“There is huge relief and pride with what this squad has achieved,” smiled Bailey. “To secure back-to-back promotions and the league, it’s more than we could ever have wished.

“It is fantastic for the club, everyone has worked so hard, the players have been terrific.

“It was nice to get another clean sheet today and our defence all season has been fantastic,”added the boss.

“We could have scored more, but I’ll take 5-0, thank you very much!”

Amesbury Town are on the cusp of securing runners-up spot after a 4-0 win at Hythe & Dibden.

Josh Thomas and Nic Turpin scored a brace apiece for the Wiltshire side, who have won eight on the spin.
