THERE’S nothing like a good win to get you in the mood for a cup final – and, boy, did Team Solent deliver.

James Taylor’s Southampton Solent University side went goal crazy in their penultimate Sydenhams Premier fixture of the season, pulverising Bournemouth Poppies 9-1 at Test Park.

It was the perfect warm-up for tomorrow afternoon's (Monday, 3pm) Sydenhams League Cup final against Newport IoW at Salisbury’s Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

Martin Johnson (3) and Tobi Adekunle (2) led the way, backed by singles from Josh Brimacombe-Wiard, Lewis Pitts, Jim Orvis and an own goal.

Newport also packed their shooting boots for their trip to second-to-bottom Alresford Town, coming away handsome 6-1 victors through Jimmi Burton (2), Joe Butcher, Tom McInnes, Liam Newbold and Ryan Oatley.

Sholing wrapped up the season with a 2-0 win at Fawley AFC.

Dean Faithfull bundled in an early goal and Dan Mason applied a cool finish to keep the Boatmen two points clear in second.

However, a late Blackfield & Langley winner against Whitchurch means the Watersiders can overtake them if they win at Fareham Town on Thursday. Sholing have had a strong finish to 2015/16, chalking up eight wins in a row.

Mason’s goal was his 39th of the campaign – two ahead of golden boot rival Sam Wilson of Salisbury – but the champions still have two games to play.

Blackfield edged a thriller 4-3 against Whitchurch, twice coming back from behind before Rico Wilson bagged an 87th-minute winner.

Tiredness got the better of Wessex kings Salisbury who lost their eleventh April fixture 4-1 at AFC Portchester.

Eddie Perrett’s goal provided the only bright spot for Whites who lost to strikes by Jason Parish (2), Curt Robbins and Luke Sweeney – and had Sam Roberts red-carded.
