GLORIOUS late spring sunshine shone down on the Raymond McEnhill Stadium today as Salisbury were crowned Sydenhams Wessex League champions in their first season since being reformed.

To add to the celebratory mood of the afternoon, Whites' Southampton-based striker Sam Wilson finished as the league's top scorer as his second-half penalty clinched a 1-0 win over Newport IoW.

Wilson had started the game on the bench despite being only one goal away from claiming the golden boot outright.

He was rushed onto the pitch in place of ex-Saint Jamie White in the 54th minute after Adam Kelly had been brought down in the box by Newport defender Spike Pearce

But that proved an anti-climax as his poor penalty was easily saved by 'keeper Gary Streeter diving to his right.

But Wilson, was was tied on 39 goals with Sholing's Dan Mason, got his chance of redemption just two minutes later.

Claudio Herbert's cross was handled by Ryan Oatley and referee Matthew Russell again pointed to the spot.

This time Wilson was composed, sending Streeter the wrong way for his 40th goal of the campaign.

It wasn't the greatest of games, but the 865 fans packed into the Ray Mac were there for one thing - to watch Salisbury skipper Kane O’Keefe lift the league trophy.

The players soaked in the atmosphere on the hottest day of the year so far and Steve Claridge's squad can now look forward to Southern League football next season.
