STEVE Hollick is convinced more Wessex footballers could – and should – follow Neil Williams’ footsteps into the Southern League.

Williams’ reward for an outstanding debut season in the Southern One South & West was to agree another year with the Stags this week.

Not only is he a real inspiration for any Wessex player contemplating stepping up a league, but the striker-turned-midfielder is proof that it is never too late to tap into your true potential.

Stags boss Hollick said: “Willo was a real unsung hero for us last year. He’d never played in the Southern League before.

“He took a while to settle but he really came on strong towards the end of the season and established himself as a Southern League footballer.

“He’s in his early 30s, but Willo's as fit as a fiddle and he’s chipped in with some vital goals.

“He’s done the rounds in the Wessex League with Bemerton and Blackfield and he’s a good example of why players should come out of their comfort zone and try the Southern League.

"His all-round play and the way he’s conducted himself has been excellent and he’s been brilliant to work with. He was fantastic after Christmas with his work-rate.”

Much as Hollick appreciates the attractions of the Sydenhams Wessex League, he said: “We need a couple more like Neil Williams to come and give the Southern League a go.

“I understand that the Wessex is a good league and a nice, comfortable place to be, but it’s a different challenge travelling to the West Country to pit your wits against lads you don’t know.”

With influential centre-back Patrick Wilson also re-signing this evening, Hollick is close to getting the bulk of last season’s squad tied up for 2016/17.

Talks are still ongoing with young midfielders Jack Alexander and Jake Burgess and there are plans to bring in some new faces once pre-season gets underway.
