AFC TOTTON have welcomed in their first new playing recruit ahead of the 2016/17 Southern One South & West campaign.

Manager Steve Hollick has swooped for frontman Dan Munday, who netted 25 goals in 42 (31 starts) appearances for Sydenhams Premier outfit Blackfield & Langley last term.

An ex-Dorchester and Poole Town youngster, Bournemouth-based Munday had a brief taste of Southern League football with Wimborne last season and is hungry for more.

“Dan wants a good crack at it if he’s going to make the step up and that’s half the battle,” said Hollick.

“He’s only young and it’s easier to persuade someone like him who wants to play at this level and is not so worried about the travelling than it is to persuade someone who is longer in the tooth to make the step up from the Wessex.

“Dan will add competition for frontline places.

“We’ve already got the experience of Nathaniel Sherborne and Mark Gamble and the youth of Dylan Knight who is keen to impress. Dan’s in that same mould as Dylan and the four of them will have a good tussle for the two shirts.

“Dan does all his work around the box, he’s quite quick and he’s a natural finisher.

“We’ve got two superb wingers in Mike Gosney and Nick Watts who should provide ample ammunition for these guys.

“We monitored Dan when he was at Blackfield and it’s always good when you highlight someone you’d like to sign and it comes off.”

Totton, who reported back for training last week, expect at least another couple of additions to supplement a squad that promised much yet finished a disappointing 15th last term.

“We needed to freshen up a bit. Dan’s the first and hopefully there will be a couple of other new faces or, if funds permit, maybe a few more,” added Hollick.

“We had the nucleus of a good side last season. We just didn’t perform to the best of our ability.”
