BLACKFIELD & Langley ruthlessly blasted through to the last 16 of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup on Saturday with a 9-0 demolition job on Amesbury Town – and they didn’t even have their top scorer playing.

Ex-Saints sharpshooter Jamie White was rested by the Watersiders along with Joe Byrne and Ryan Murray.

The suspended Luke Winsper and the unwell Ethan Miller didn’t feature either, but Blackfield still possessed the strength in depth to totally dominate the second round tie.

“We put in a couple of nippers, Lewis Gill and Josh Rose, and young John Cole’s played a few games for us in any case. They’re all teenagers,” said B&L’s assistant manager Chris Farrell.

It was Cole who struck first with ten minutes gone and defender Sam Poole made it 2-0 at half-time.

Amesbury endured a torrid start to the second half as Carl Preston, Cole and Liam Robinson struck in quick succession and, come the 72nd minute, it was 7-0 with player-coach Tim Sills and Ash Howes adding to Blackfield’s burgeoning tally.

Still the green and white shirts kept flooding forward with Robinson and Gill netting numbers eight and nine.

“We were clinical,” said Farrell. “In the second half, we ripped them to pieces.

“In all fairness to Amesbury they kept trying to play and didn’t resort to trying to kick us off the park, but we were obviously better than them.

“They also had three or four players missing, but to win 9-0 against a team who have taken ten league points from five games is very pleasing.

“I know Glenn (Howes, manager) was happy – one, because it gave the younger players a chance to step up and, two, because we kept a clean sheet which keeps going with what we’ve been doing.

“We’ve got a free week now, which is nice, and then it’s away to Andover Town in the league on Saturday.”

Promotion-hungry Blackfield currently top the Sydenhams Premier standings with a maximum 18 points from six games.
