FA Cup round-up

SALISBURY’S FA Cup run ground to a halt with a 2-1 home defeat by higher league Gloucester City.

A second-half header from Tigers striker Luke Hopper proved the difference for the National League North visitors.

Gloucester had raced into an early lead when Chris Knowles punished some sloppy Salisbury defending.

The Whites looked dejected and lacked ideas for a short period, but the Southern One South & West outfit gradually grew in confidence and Sam Roberts curled home a 33rd-minute equaliser following a corner.

Salisbury could have gone in front when Lewis Benson played in Tommy Wright, but the on-loan Sutton striker shot wide.

They kept pressing but, in the 79th minute and against the run of play, George Colson eagerly went for a ball and collided with Gloucester substitute James Fitzgibbon.

From the resulting free kick, Hopper rose to head past Nathan Ball in the Salisbury goal.

Former Sholing hotshot Lee Wort scored for Poole Town at Chippenham, but it was scant consolation for Tom Killick’s men who exited the FA Cup 4-1.

Ex-Salisbury man Andy Sandell scored a hat-trick for the Bluebirds, with Dave Pratt also on target.

Former AFC Totton striker Stefan Brown’s penalty for Hungerford triggered Basingstoke Town’s 1-0 exit at the Camrose, while Gosport Borough stumbled to a 3-2 defeat at Jason Matthews’ Weymouth.

Josh Carmichael’s opener for Borough was wiped out by Stewart Yetton, Ben Thomson and Charlie Davis before Dan Wooden hit back for the visitors in stoppage time.

It was the end of the FA Cup road too for the last remaining Sydenhams Premier Division sides.

Alresford Town (Tom Sands) slipped up 3-1 at home to Cadbury Heath while AFC Portchester were ousted 2-0 by Merthyr Town at Wicor Rec.

Good news, though, for Havant & Waterlooville who breezed past underdogs Highworth Town 5-1 at Westleigh Park. Ex-Saint Matt Paterson (3), Ryan Woodford and James Hayter (pen) fired the Hawks through.
