WINCHESTER City were dumped out of the FA Cup 2-1 by a galling stoppage-time goal at Harrow Borough yesterday.

But that wasn’t the only body blow the Citizens suffered on cruel afternoon at the Earlsmead Stadium.

They lost midfield warhorse Jamie Brown to an impact injury just six minutes into the third qualifying round tie.

And the bad news for the City skipper is that he has broken three bones in his foot, ruling him out for the foreseeable future.

Winchester made the brighter start against their Ryman Premier hosts and took the lead when Danny King was hauled down in the area and Howard Neighbour stepped up to bury the 16th-minute penalty.

The introduction of Ibrahim Meite from the bench freshened up Harrow’s attack and, with nine minutes of normal time remaining, the hosts levelled through Shaun Preddie via a couple of ricochets.

City still looked good for a replay but, as the tie spilled into added time, Francis Babola crossed for Meite to slam home Harrow’s winner.

“It was disappointing in the end,” admitted City manager Ian Saunders.

“It got to the late stages and we were a bit disappointed not to get a foul in the box for their equaliser.

“To lose it like we did was gutting because I genuinely feel we did enough to win the game.

“I wouldn’t go as far as to say we were comfortable at 1-0, but we defended like our lives depended on it.

“Our all-round play wasn’t as good as we’d hoped, but the effort and commitment shown is where we aim to be on a weekly basis.

“We're all gutted our Cup run has come to an end, but if we take these performances into the league we will definitely win more games than we lose.

“We took a coach-load of fans to Harrow and they were brilliant on the touchline and gave the lads a huge lift.”

Next up for Winchester is a trip to AFC Totton on Tuesday (7.45pm) in the Southern League Challenge Cup.

*HAVANT & Waterlooville were buried under an avalanche of FA Cup goals at Ebbfleet United.

The Kent hosts, managed by ex-Eastleigh skipper Daryl McMahon, steamrollered their Ryman Premier visitors 7-0.

Havant had Lee Molyneaux controversially sent off for an alleged elbow on Dave Winfield at 2-0 down as Ebbsfleet romped to their biggest FA Cup win for 21 years.

Former Eastleigh boss Richard Hill had better luck.

He led his Whitehawk side into the fourth qualifying round with a 2-0 win over Merthyr Town courtesy of ex-Spitfire Reece Connolly and Sergio Torres.
