NEW signing Andy Jenkinson made an immediate impact for Winchester City, scoring twice in last night’s 3-2 Southern League Challenge Cup victory at AFC Totton.

Goalkeeper Steve Mowthorpe had kept the Stags in it with a string of saves before Jenkinson – new in from Chippenham Town - curled in a free-kick just after the half-hour mark.

And 21-year-old Jenkinson, formerly of Reading, Basingstoke Town and Maidenhead, made it 2-0 on 57 minutes, mopping up the rebound after Taz Roberts’ cross had rebounded off the far post.

Totton made a game of it, hitting back to level through Nick Watts and a 30-yard wonder strike from Mike Gosney with five minutes to go.

But Winchester’s Sam Wilson won it from the penalty spot after the flying Jason Silver had been felled by home sub Alex Haynes.

“It was a well-deserved win that we nearly threw away!” said City’s director of football Dave Malone.

Winchester are in FA Trophy action on Saturday (3pm) at home to manager Ian Saunders’ old club Petersfield Town in the preliminary round. Totton travel to Wimborne Town.
