WINCHESTER City paid the price for missed chances in last night’s 2-1 home defeat to North Leigh in the Southern One South & West.

Having fallen behind to a soft free header from Aaron Woodley with 20 minutes gone, City equalised six minutes later when Stuart Green turned and cross for Taz Roberts to find the roof of the net.

Winchester had opportunities to go in front - most notably when Green’s shot hit the upright, rebounded off his leg and rolled just past the post.

More chances passed them by as they grew into the second half, but it was North Leigh who found the 82nd-minute finish when Woodley struck left-footed for his second of the game.

Craig Feeney might have levelled in stoppage-time when he burst through one-on-one, but his shot went wide.

City’s director of football Dave Malone said: “After conceding a poor early goal we clawed our way back into this game, finishing the first half level and looking the better side.

“Second half saw us on the back foot early doors, but after conceding a second goal, we spurned several decent chances that would have earned us at least a point.

“However, goals win games.”

Winchester, 14th, face another tough task on Saturday away to fourth-placed Mangotsfield United.

North Leigh, up to tenth, will be back in Hampshire visiting AFC Totton in Louis Langdown's first game in charge of the Stags.
