WINCHESTER City’s bid for a clean sweep of December victories faltered at the final hurdle today.

Their run of six straight wins – five of them in the league – ground to a halt as they were pipped 1-0 at home by Wimborne Town in the Southern One South & West.

While Winchester were without their 24-goal top gun Craig Feeney, who was away on a Christmas break, Wimborne had their leading scorer to thank for their slender win.

The deciding goal arrived on 21 minutes when Luke Holmes won the ball in midfield and played in his namesake Toby, who duly slotted past Lewis Noice in the City goal.

It was the 22nd of the season for former Dorchester Town sharpshooter Toby Holmes.

City, who had steamrollered Slimbridge 7-0 in their previous game, had chances to level after the break but couldn’t make one count.

Next up for Ian Saunders’ men is a new year’s derby trip to AFC Totton next Monday (January 2, 3pm).

*Due to problems relating to the closure of the Waterside Sports & Social Club, tomorrow's Waterside derby between Fawley AFC and Blackfield & Langley in the Sydenhams Premier Division has been switched to Blackfield’s Gang Warily ground (Wednesday, 7.45pm).

*Hamble Club returned to the top of Sydenhams One today with a 2-1 derby win over Folland Sports. On an emotional afternoon, both clubs dedicated the game to popular coach Darren Burdle who tragically passed away last week, aged 50.
