WINCHESTER City have a point to prove when Shortwood United visit the Denplan City Ground on Saturday.

The Citizens lost the away match 2-1 in mid-October - a game in which manager Ian Saunders believes they had enough chances to have won.

“I don’t believe in revenge and all that sort of stuff, but we missed four routine chances at Shortwood and tomorrow will be a good marker for us to see how far we’ve come,” said the boss.

“Shortwood are a decent side who put us under a bit of pressure up there, but we came away disappointed because we thought it was a game we could have won.”

Having kicked off the new year on a winning note at AFC Totton on Monday, Winchester mean to carry on in 2017 as they started.

The Testwood Stadium victory, in which Stuart Green scored twice, was City’s sixth win out of their last seven Southern One South & West games - a record blemished only by a 1-0 defeat by Wimborne at the end of December.

“The run starts again, so let’s see how many points we can get this month,” said Saunders.

“We’re back in the top ten and we’ve got pretty much a settled squad . If we can continue this run, who knows?

“I’m not saying the play-offs is something we can achieve, but the closer you get, the more you’ve got to play for.”

City - ten points adrift of fifth-placed Mangotsfield - are still without left-back Danny King who is taking an enforced rest after mild concussion.

Matt Evans was due in for treatment last night on a foot injury and Saunders is unsure whether midfielder Danny Smith will be ready to return after welcoming a new baby into the family.
