PORTLAND United are facing the break-up of their Sydenhams Premier Division title-winning team — but assistant manager Mark Carter is staying put.

Defender Ross Carmichael’s move to Alresford Town is expected to be followed by several more departures, with Jamie Beasley, Ed Bastick, Chris Clarke and Max Buckler all linked with moves to Southern Premier Division outfit Dorchester Town.

New boss Simon Browne, who has succeeded Gary Bailey at the Blues’ helm, feels it was inevitable after the success of last season that Portland’s players would be coveted elsewhere.

He said: “I’ve spoken to them all (Beasley, Bastick, Clarke and Buckler).

“It’s an inevitability of the success the club had last year that clubs in higher leagues are going to take an interest in players and the players are going to be attracted to other clubs. It’s just football.

“All four of them have said that if it doesn’t work out at Dorchester then they will come back to Portland, but it’s certainly not definite that they will go up there.”

Carter, a key component of the backroom staff behind Bailey, has agreed to stay on as Browne’s right-hand man.

“Reggie (Carter) played a big part in Portland’s success. It was a no-brainer to keep going,” said Browne.

“He’s hot property because he was wanted by Brendon King at Hamworthy. I’m pleased he’s staying on and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

*SYDENHAMS Division One outfit Downton have announced some changes at the top.

Mark Smith has returned to Wick Lane for a second stint as chairman.

And, following Rae Hughes’ departure to neighbouring Bemerton Heath Harlequins, Nigel Green will partner club stalwart Ben Smith as joint boss.

Green has a wealth of Wessex experience under his belt as a goalkeeping coach, having had recent spells with Whitchurch United and Romsey Town.

Smith will double up as player/boss and Mark Gulliver will be assistant manager.
