Sholing rue disallowed goal

Sholing were left to rue what might have been after last night’s 2-2 home draw against Didcot Town in the Southern One South & West.

The Boatmen thought they had put clear water between themselves and their Oxfordshire visitors when Lee Wort found the net shortly after they had gone 2-1 up.

But the goal was ruled out following the intervention of the assistant referee who said that Wort had impeded a defender before firing home from 18 yards.

“It should have been 3-1, but we’ve had a perfectly good goal ruled out. Worty did nothing wrong,” said Sholing boss Dave Diaper.

Didcot drew first blood at the Silverlake Arena with Morgan Williams belting in a 25-yarder midway through the first half.

Sholing levelled four minutes before the break when Barry Mason headed home Kevin Brewster’s corner, and they got their noses in front through centre-back Lee Bright with 53 minutes gone.

But there was double disappointment ahead for Sholing with Wort’s disallowed effort quickly followed by a Didcot leveller on the hour - Morgan James setting up ex-Thatcham striker James Clark to score.

I was at the game and it looked a perfectly good goal. The ref was going to allow it but the lino flagged. It was never clear what for and the lino spent what seemed like an age explaining his ruling to the ref. It certainly was not for offside. Even the Didcot players seemed surprised. The old line 'We Wus Robbed' springs to mind.
