Millbrook’s trip to play the Isle of Wight got off to a dramatic start when their Red Funnel ferry was involved in a sea rescue.

The craft launched its rescue boat after spotting an upturned dinghy. It picked one person from the vessel and transferred them to Southampton Patrol Boat, which also picked up two people.

However Brook’s mind was clearly on their game by the time the promotion-seeking Snows Group Hampshire 1 team had reached dry land.

Rich Colmer got Brook off to a good start when he slotted home a penalty.

Flanker Barney Jones made several storming runs to build a platform for the visiting side and he was soon involved in the first try. The ball was moved wide with Colmer making a break before the inside pass to captain Mike Randell who touched down.

An unfortunate first-half knee injury to front row Dean Vincent meant a return to first team action for Fijian Ratu Degei.

Rich Colmer knocked over a second penalty to extend the lead and Brook finished the half strongly with the forwards and backs combining well. The half ended with Isle of Wight adding their own penalty to make it 13-3.

Brook introduced Tom Stubbs after the break and he impressed with some clinical passing.

Isle of Wight continued to battle but Millbrook's defence remained tight and Colmer was soon on hand to add to his points tally with an intercepted try, conversion and penalty to extend Brook’s lead.

With Millbrook coasting a little too much they were only able to convert one more attack into a try – the final play of the game saw centre Randell take a short pass from full back Rhys Fehners and break the line to dive over under the posts. Colmer’s conversion closed the contest at 30-3.

Randell said: “We were defensively sound today, both organised and aggressive enough to stop them scoring.

“There were lots of good performances across the team and this is important with the next three weeks being tough fixtures against Fordingbridge, US Portsmouth and a cup semi-final coming up.”
