Premier League manager to carry Olympic torch
1:42pm Monday 28th May 2012 in Premier League
TONY PULIS
Stoke manager Tony Pulis is to be given the honour of carrying the Olympic torch later this week.
Pulis, thought to be the only top-flight manager to be given the honour, will be handed the torch as the nationwide relay leaves Stoke-on-Trent on Thursday.
Pulis, who will take up the flame as it leaves the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in the city centre, said he was delighted at the honour.
"This is an historic event for the whole of Britain and it is an immensely proud feeling to be able to say that you are carrying the Olympic torch as part of that build-up," Pulis said.
"I am extremely honoured to be given the privilege of representing Stoke-on-Trent and to be among those offered this most prestigious of opportunities."
Mark Meredith, Stoke's cabinet member for economic development, said: "To have someone of Tony's calibre and close links to the city carrying the torch is superb news.
"Stoke City fans obviously hold him in extremely high regard and it would be great to see them all lining the route in the city centre on Thursday morning."

Are they running out of popular people who want to carry the Torch?
Seriously, this devalues the profound gesture made to all the unquestionably good people, the fund-raisers, voluntary workers, local heroes, people's champions, stoical suffererers and disabled, the vulnerable, the multilevel philanthropists and all-round good-eggs who were proposed for this honour- check out their pen-pictures on the official 2012 website or via the local media. Do these publicity seeking celebrities deserve or get nominated for this community honour? Do they pay for their own torch (£ 215 please) or is this someone else being milked from the public purse to subsidise the usual Fat Cat Party junket budget?
The "someone" could be the worthies/ plebians running with the torches shelling out about £16m to buy them, enough to cover a few more LOCOG/ COE alliance bun-fights and luxury hotels, where they could again urge the "people" to raise more money to fund their torch purhases!
