SHOLING rose to second in the Sydenhams Premier Division on an emotional afternoon at the Universal Stadium.
Before kick-off against Whitchurch United, right-back Kevin Brewster and his family joined the teams on the pitch for a minute's applause for his dad, Derek, who passed away this week.
Derek - a former Saints steward - had been suffering with cancer for a number of years and leaves widow Christine, sons Paul and Kevin, and daughter Helen.
A registered local referee, sports-mad Derek was also a regular spectator at Mansbridge Cricket Club and at the Ageas Bowl, home of Hampshire Cricket.
Sholing did Derek proud with a 1-0 win, settled on 18 minutes when Dan Mason acrobatically volleyed in Alex Sawyer's knock-back.
It prompted the entire side to run across and celebrate with their teammate Brewy. The rest of the game was forgettable, but it was another win for Sholing and a 13th clean sheet.
