ANOTHER of AFC Totton’s talented, table-topping squad is attracting interest from the Football League.

Totton, who tightened their stranglehold on the Zamaretto South & West with a 7-0 hammering of Hungerford on Saturday, have confirmed that winger Mike Gosney was not the only young Stag training with npower Championship club Millwall last week.

Joining him in South Bermondsey was 21-year-old former Christchurch and Eastleigh talent Michael Green, who plays directly behind Gosney at left-back.

Assistant manager Sean New confirmed: “Michael was up at Millwall on Monday and Thursday of last week.

“It’s very close between him and Gosney as to who has been our star man.

“If you were going to pick our player-of-the-season you’d say Gosney, as he’s scored about 40 goals, and Green, as nothing gets past him down that left-hand side.

“If both were to go it would leave two massive holes, but they’re good, young players and they deserve their chance of pro football.

“I think they stand a good chance because they’re both very athletic and strong. They train hard and really look after themselves.

“Greener is probably as quick as Gosney and he just shuts up shop behind him.

The pair of them are ridicu lously good together.”

For the second time in five days, Gosney helped himself to four goals on Saturday.

Blitzing bottom-of-the-table Andover 9-0 on Tuesday was one thing, but Hungerford were sitting fifth prior to being torn to shreds by Stuart Ritchie’s pedigree side.

Nathaniel Sherborne got the demolition job under way five minutes in, collecting the ball 35 yards out, turning and leaving the centre-half for dead before racing into the 18- yard box and firing home. Gosney doubled the lead from close range, Sherborne made it three five minutes later and then Gosney scored a penalty on the stroke of half-time after Carl Pettefer had been bundled over.

The Gosney show continued after the break. Having sup plied the assist for Stefan Brown to net a bullet header, he nodded home Jonathan Davies’s cross and then side- footed in number seven.

“We were rampant, but I was a bit disappointed with Hungerford,” New confessed.

“They’re teetering on the brink of the play-offs, but they looked a bit deflated. Our keeper Grant Porter didn’t have a save to make. We ter rorised them – Gosney and Jono Davies were on fire.”

Totton remain eight points clear of Sholing, who have a game in hand, and need four points from their remaining three games against North Leigh (away, April 16), Mangotsfield (home, April 23) and Gosport Borough (away, April 25) to take the title.

“We’ve got our heads in front, but there’s still all to play for,” said New.
