Hockey star Ollie a late winner for Salisbury
11:13am Wednesday 31st October 2012 in General Sport
Ollie Budniak in action against Haslemere
Ollie Budniak snatched a last gasp winner as Salisbury, 2-0 up inside ten minutes, later came from behind to beat Haslemere 4-3 and so secure a third Hampshire/Surrey Regional League, Division 2 victory, writes Mike Vimpany.
The downside to the result is that James Hayward, who scored Salisbury’s opening two goals, injured himself in the process and may be ruled out of Saturday’s visit to table toppers Winchester.
Salisbury made a near perfect start against a Haslemere side they pipped to last season’s Hampshire League championship.
Budniak was the creator of both early goals – but Hayward’s second came at a price, the South Wilts cricket captain taking no further part in proceedings after suffering a rib muscle injury.
When Dave Pipe left the pitch feeling unwell, Salisbury really were up against it and it was probably no surprise that Haslemere clawed a goal back before half-time.
Despite some fine saves by Greg Ridout, the Surrey visitors scored twice more early in the second half to turn the game on its head.
But, with ten minutes left, Salisbury equalised – Tom Morton’s shot from a penalty corner deflected in by Budniak.
Then, in a frantic finale, Salisbury won another penalty corner and Budniak scrambled home the winner.
