Sue Merry’s penalty stroke earned Southampton Ladies a 1-1 draw at South Women’s League, Division 2 rivals Henley – but the city girls owed as much to veteran goalkeeper Linda Dunham for their point.
“She had a stormer between the posts,” enthused Southampton coach Roger Merry. “All in all, it was a good team performance to bring home a point.”
Dunham kept Southampton in the game with a series of fine saves from Henley penalty corners – her agility helping to inspire the visitors to snatch a 24th minute lead.
Katherine Bailey and Helen Carter were involved in the move which led to Merry’s penalty, awarded for a stick tackle on Emily Knibb.
Southampton’s lead lasted until 11 minutes into the second half when Henley equalised from a penalty corner.
