An 8lb 4oz thorneback ray bagged by Kai Sutherland was the highlight when members of Southampton SAC held a shore competition on the Browndown ranges.

Spotted rays, pout, whiting and bass also figured in the catch. Sutherland won the event with 9lb 8oz followed by Bill Baynes (6lb 4oz) and Chris Barnes (2lb 12oz).

On the Isle of Wight, some superb fish have been recorded with Russ Catling beaching a 42lb conger from a mark along the back of the Wight.

The Island black bream record took a tumble with Andrew Clarke recording a beauty of 4lb 2.25oz while fishing the Sandown section. Junior Ryan Bravery landed a 9lb 4oz small-eyed-ray from a shore location, which was weighed and returned alive. Bass, pout, whiting, dogfish, dabs, plaice, silver eels and smoothhound provided the action during an Allan’s Marine midweek Super League match at Browndow.

John Brown (Southampton) took the honours with 10lb 4.75oz. Others: Dave Edwards 6lb 12.5oz, 3rd Adrian Carter 5lb 10.25oz, 4th Mick Goodger 5lb 4.5oz, 5th Ernie King 4lb 12.25oz, 6th Dave Ware 3lb 9oz.

The next match in the pegged open series, which is judged to the weight for length system, will be held on May 13 along Clarence Sea Wall with fishing from 8pm to midnight. Tickets details and pre book facilities from the crew at Allan’s Marine (02392671833).

The action was disappointing when Lock, Stock & Tackle staged their first match of their pegged open catch & release Friday evenings series at Eastney.

Just the odd garfish, plaice, flounder and pollack were recorded.

Darren Wilson collected over £70 for winning the event with a solitary garfish measuring 62cm followed by Ian Golds with a brace of small flatties for 39cm. SANDOWN & LAKE AC: The action was disappointing during a midweek match fished from the local pier where just a few flounders and dabs were recorded. Results: 1st Jake Grimaldi 11.5oz, =2nd Pete Kingswell & Keith Russell 6oz, 4th Shaun Graham 3oz.

A second shore competition was equally disappointing with Anthony Modes needing just 9.5oz to get the better of Scott White (3.5oz) and Jake Grimaldi (3oz).

WARREN BOAT AC: A junior shore competition fished at Magazine Lane left many of the youngsters struggling for a bite, though winner Zack Perry did record two pouting and a whiting.
