A good variety of species were recorded during the eighth round of the Hampshire League at Eastney where Mick Webb bagged a trio of codling and a small silver eel, together weighing 3lb 13oz, for victory.

The event attracted 50 competitors who recorded two bass, three black bream, 11 codling, one dab, seven red mullet, two smoothhound and three silver eels, along with 138 undersize fish which were all returned to the water at the point of capture, writes CHRIS CLARK.

Results – A Zone: 1 Danny Mogridge 3lb 4.25oz, 2 Mike Groves 1lb 15.25oz, 3 John Davies 1lb 14.25oz, 4 Gary Johnson 1lb 12.25oz, 5 Justin Roulland 1lb 4.75oz. B Zone: 1 Mick Webb 3lb 13oz, 2 Pat Dalton 2lb 9.25oz, 3 Peter Farrell 1lb 13oz, 4 Russell Warwick 11lb 11.75oz, 5 Neil Burrow 1lb 9.25oz.

Mike Groves now heads the overall leader table with 42 penalty points, followed by Danny Mogridge (44) and Peter Farell (50.

Some great bass have been caught by anglers heading afloat, with Simon Nichols recording the pick of the bunch, a beauty which tipped the scales down to 9lb 2oz while boat fishing close to the entrance of Poole harbour.

Nichols used a whole mackerel to tempt the hefty predator which sets a new personal best; it was weighed and verified by the crew at Castaways Tackle Sixteen differing species were recorded during the pegged open Samalite League match held at Abbotsbury with Darren Stevens recording the night’s heaviest fish, a 14lb 6oz conger. Results – A Zone: 1 Darren Stevens 20lb 8oz, 2 Dave Lane 11lb 2oz, 3 Ryan Casey 9lb 11oz.

B Zone: 1 Ian Dancey 10lb 8oz, 2 Russell Preston 8lb 11oz, 3 Richard Dorgan 8lb 10oz. Brook was the setting for the second round of the Scotties/Ammo Winter League where Martin Hicks recorded the night’s heaviest fish, a 10lb 11oz undulate ray. Results – A Zone: 1 Michael Wyatt 2lb 5.5oz, 2 Steve Deacon 2lb 5oz, 3 Scott White 2lb 4oz. B Zone: 1 Martin Hicks 10lb 15oz, 2 Steve Elwood 10lb 8oz, 3 Xav Bishop 2lb 7oz.

Whiting, silver eels, pout, codling and smoothhound provided some lively action during a Rovers Tackle midweek pegged catch-and-release open shore competition fished at Stokes Bay. The night’s longest fish was a 38cm codling bagged by Dave Edwards. Results: 1 Mick Goodger 356cm, 2 Cormack McHennan 328cm, 3 Mark Vinter 316cm.

A £500 top prize is on offer during the annual Portchester open shore competition which this year is being run in association with Solent Tackle.
