Martial arts expert Trevor Birmingham has set his sights on becoming the world’s best.

The 41-year-old Romsey-based fighter, who made his name in the British Judo Team, is aiming to become the undisputed champion of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

After taking up this particular style of jiu-jitsu four years ago – following the end of his judo career – the personal trainer, who runs martial arts classes in Romsey and Southampton, wants to conquer the world.

The trainer at Exile Gym in Shirley, Southampton, will travel to the North American Grappling Association World Championships in Texas, USA this month. That will be followed in January by the European Championships in Portugal, then, he hopes, he will go to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates for the World Professional Championships.

The self-confessed fitness junky has already won the European championships, Pan American championships and, on top of that, he collected a silver and bronze medal at the World Championships.

But he is still yet to complete his ambitions of claiming the world gold.

“I have had a lot of success over the last two years,” he said. “I’ve gone to many countries competing.

“It is very competitive and takes a lot of physical and mental preparation.

“My next steps will only be possible with help of funding from a sponsor as it has cost a lot of money.

“I am happy to fight all over the world and promote whoever can help me get to my goals.

“I also would like to help promote and see the sport grow in the south of England to put us on the map.”

As well as the worlds, Birmingham is aiming to fight in the prestigious Asian Open in Japan. Anyone able to help Trevor achieve his dream of becoming world champion by sponsoring him is asked to contact him on 07973506476.
