A dazzling display of clinical finishing in a ‘dog-eat-dog’ battle of the oche has put New Forest player Scott Mitchell into tomorrow's semi-finals of the Lakeside World Championship.

Mitchell, known as Scotty Dog, produced a brilliant 61 per cent check-out average to defeat England’s Brian ‘Doggy’ Dawson by five sets to two.

The landscape gardener from a Bransgore farming family even upped his week’s three-dart scoring average to plus 96 as he produced his best ever game in the British Darts Organisation competition at famous Frimley Green.

Following the one-sided victory Mitchell said: “From eight-years-old I have watched the Lakeside constantly and now that I have finally come here and made it - this is crazy.”

Mitchell produced some quality arrows to make it through the first round against three times finalist Tony OShea. He won that match in a nailbiting, sudden death play-off leg before going on to defeat Belgian Geert de Vos.

But nothing compared to yesterday’s performance that included five ton-plus finishes at critical stages of the match.

Fourth seed Mitchell showed his form from the start, winning the first leg against the throw before wrapping up set one 3-0.

He warmed up set two with a two-dart 82 shot (bull, double 16) and checked out on 142 as he claimed six of the opening seven legs of the match.

Mitchell was looking good at two legs up in the third set but, as he predicted, the Yorkshireman was still snapping at his heels and reeled off three legs to win a set.

However, at this point, Mitchell’s check-out rate was 77 per cent and another 142 finish helped him regain his two-set cushion at 3-1.

The only time Mitchell was not in control of the game was set five which Dawson went on to secure. But Mitchell was soon back to his best finishing – hitting the bull to complete a 132 check-out.

Another three-darter, this time a 129 and again ending on the bull, put the finishing line in sight and Mitchell, who had failed to make it past the second round in five previous attempts, quickly moved into the semi-finals.

Opponent Brian Dawson said: “Scott Mitchell was outstanding today. He just kept hitting b big finishes and taking them out when he needed them.”
