Itchen Sixth Form College is celebrating their most successful year ever in regional sporting events.

Three of their teams won south east regional tournaments, progressing to the national finals weekend in late March.

Nearly 50 students from the college’s academy of sport will travel to Bath to represent the south east region in basketball, football, cross-country, badminton and golf.

The ladies’ basketball team was the first group to book their places at the finals weekend with an impressive set of results in their regional tournament held in Farnborough.

They won the round-robin event, winning every game by at least 20 points.

Chloe Lammas, Hannah Croad and Lydia Hume all impressed as Itchen’s effective full-court press led to them dominating possession.

The men basketballers matched their achievement following victory in their own regional tournament held at Sussex Downs College.

They also won every game, but their final – against Brighton Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College – was a close affair, a Dan Hemmingway free throw securing victory by a single point.

Itchen’s ladies’ football team are the current English Colleges Football Association national champions, and went into their regional tournament as the team to beat.

The five-a-side format led to high-scoring matches, with Itchen scoring at least six goals in each of their games.

They beat Surrey-based Strodes College in the quarter-final, Farnborough College in the semi, and hosts Portsmouth College in the final itself.

Itchen’s academy of sport also recorded successful outcomes in individual events, with badminton player Kelvin Latimer, cross-country runner Mahamed Mahamed and golfer George Henderson also joining the trip to the nationals weekend in Bath.

Head of sport, Glenn Colmer, said: “We’re having a great year, and we’ve never sent so many students to the finals weekend.

“It’s a huge event, and a great opportunity for these very talented teams and individuals to compete with the very best in the country.

“A number of our students are hoping to win US Sports Scholarships after Itchen, and this provides a taste of how big college sport can be.”
