The Premier League’s new £5.136billion TV deal has given rise to suggestions that England’s top-flight will soon have its first £500,000 per week footballer.

Here, the Daily Echo compares salary levels in different sports.

FOOTBALL England captain Wayne Rooney earns £230,000 a week (£12million annually) plus an image rights deal while his Manchester United teammate Radamel Falcao takes home a reported £265,000 each week.

The average annual salary for a first-team player at Manchester City is £5.3million, or more than £100,000 a week.

According to the Financial Times, the average weekly wage in the Championship, League One and League Two last season was £6,049, £1,690 and £801 respectively.

CRICKET England’s top cricketers with full ECB central contracts earn £700,000 to £800,000 a year plus match fees – a big rise was agreed recently to compensate the players for not being available to cash in on the riches of the Indian Premier League.

At county level, the likes of Hampshire have a salary cap of just under £2m a year for their entire playing staff.

The average first-team salary for a county cricketer is around £50,000 a year.

RUGBY UNION All Premiership clubs in England have a total annual salary cap of £5.5million to cover the whole squad – less than half Wayne Rooney’s individual wage.

An England international regular will earn around £200,000 plus £18,000 per England match.

RUGBY LEAGUE Super League clubs have to operate under a salary cap of £1.8million.

An England rugby league player could not expect to earn much over £150,000, and most would be well under that.

CYCLING Mark Cavendish and Chris Froome are believed to earn around £2.2million a year from their teams, Etixx-Quick-Step and Team Sky respectively.
