THEIR motto is to be prepared.

So a group of community-spirited Girl Guides are hatching a plan to motivate runners in the Associated British Ports (ABP) Southampton Half Marathon.

The 2nd Peartree Guides have signed up as ABP Milemakers for the big race taking place in the heart of the city on Sunday, April 26.

They are joining community groups, charities and residents lining each mile of the 13.1-mile route to inspire runners to keep going.

ABP is awarding every Milemaker a £200 donation, while the group that is voted the most motivational on the day by runners will receive a £500 prize.

The Guides are planning to use their funds towards a summer camp or to organise a teambuilding day.

Assistant leader Tracey Pitcher said: “The Guides are having real fun coming up with ideas of how to motivate the runners as they go by. It’s brilliant for them to do this because taking part will help them earn their annual community action badge.”

ABP Southampton Port director Nick Ridehalgh said: “It’s fantastic to hear that this money will be put to good use by Guides and I look forward to hearing more about their plans to inspire runners.”
