One of Hampshire’s marquee running events returns this weekend for its 31st edition.

The Eastleigh 10k Road Race, which takes place tomorrow, is among the top 50 competitions in the country.

Runners from miles around are expected to descend on Fleming Park for what is set to be another big year for the event.

The organisers are anticipating that more people than ever will turnout for the competition that first took place in 1985.

There were more than 2,500 entries involved last year in the B&Q backed competition – making it the largest 10k in the south and one of the biggest in the UK.

The fast, flat course is ideal for top athletes and fun runners alike and is becoming known as the home of the personal best time.

Glynn Tromans still holds the course record, having won in 2003 in a time of 28 minutes and 39 seconds.

Belgrave Harriers’ Phil Wicks won last year’s 30th anniversary race in 29 minutes and 34 seconds.

The race will again raise thousands for charities through the efforts of the runners and this year the race is supporting The Mayor of Eastleigh’s Appeal, Wave 105 Cash for Kids and WaterAid in Zambia.

The event, which is also backed by the Daily Echo, includes a 2k fun run for children aged 4-12.

The main competitive race will start at 9am and will be followed at 11am by the fun run.
