Trojans are through to the Hampshire Hockey Cup final for the first time in ten years after beating Fareham in a dramatic Sports Centre penalty shoot out.

They won 3-1 on penalty strokes, having been arguably the better side in a 1-1 draw in normal time.

It sets up a Bank Holiday May 4 cup final showdown with Havant, who continued their defence of the trophy with comfortable wins over Wimborne Wayfarers (5-0) and Bournemouth (6-1).

Fareham went into the county semi-final against Trojans on the back of a convincing 7-1 victory over Basingstoke but, leg weary and jaded, faced a far fresher Stoneham side next time around.

Trojans enjoyed a walkover when Hamble pulled out.

A hat-trick by Ben Hibberd, a brace from Josh Godfrey and one each by James Seager and teenager Jamie Young put Fareham through against Basingstoke.

But Trojans, who finished their debut season fourth in South Premier Division 2, proved far tougher opponents, tactically outwitting their Western Conference opponents by quick breaks out of defence.

Trojans twice missed good chances to take the lead and paid the penalty for their profligate finishing when Jon Potts poked Fareham in front from a short corner.

But Trojans hit back and soon after half-time equalised when Rich Aves went on a trademark run down the right and set up James Sordillo to make it 1-1.

Trojans arguably had the better chances to seal their victory in normal time, but when it came to penalty flicks the Stoneham guys were Fareham’s masters.

Colin French, Ian Bassett and Rich Aves all scored and, as Fareham bungled their strokes, Trojans celebrated an unexpected 3-1 victory.
