Trojans Under-18s lost out on penalty strokes to Haslemere in the Hampshire Boys Cup final at Woolmer Hill.
The sides drew 2-2 in normal time, but Haslemere won 3-2 after a below-par strokes shoot-out had gone to sudden death.
Oscar Birnie gave Trojans the lead in the final itself, but penalty corner conversions either side of half-time by Ed Tristen and Max Robertson gave Haslemere the advantage.
Simon Culmer, who had engineered Trojans’ opener, created the opportunity for Rory Scrivens to equalise.
Trojans’ prospects of winning the final outright were handicapped by four yellow cards, which led to the side being reduced to nine men at one stage.
Fine tuned by Trojans’ penalty stroke coach James Sordillo, the Stoneham youngsters were expected to win the shoot-out, but only Tom Fay and Scrivens hit the target in five attempts.
Haslemere converted a third sudden death stroke to win it.
