Gary Hunt will equal a career best if he wins the latest stage of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Saturday.

The Southampton diver, a four-time World Series champion, has won all three of the opening stages of the competition in Columbia, France and the United States this season, writes Peter Howard.

Now he is aiming to make it four victories in a row and, in turn, equal his best ever form when the event touches down in the Danish capital this weekend.

“Three wins out of three is the start that I hoped for,” said Hunt after victory in La Rochelle last month.

“I’ve had four wins in a row in my career before [in 2011] and I’m going to try and beat that again.”

The 31-year-old won in Greece, France, Italy and the United States in 2011, which meant he sealed his second world title.

Hunt is runaway leader and is currently 180 points in front as the series reaches its halfway point.

Victory at the city’s Opera House will send the ex-Quays diver on his way to a fifth crown, but will be alert to the challenges of fierce-rival Artem Silchenko.

The Russian diver recorded the highest-scoring dive the World Series has witnessed in Copenhagen in 2013.

And with a podium finish to his name in the last round in Texas, Silchenko’s confidence will be high.

Orlando Duque, who has three podium places to his name this season, will also be hoping to dent Hunt’s chase for yet another title.

The 27-metre platform will be mounted on the roof of the Opera House for the first time in two years, when Hunt finished runner-up to 2013 champion elect Silchenko.

The 14-strong field of divers will hit the water at an estimated 52mph.

Meanwhile fellow Southampton diver Blake Aldridge will be looking continue his fine form after a second-place and two top five finishes in so far this term.

Those results have taken the former Olympian to third in the standings.

The action starts with a seeding round on Friday before the divers battle it out on Saturday afternoon.
