SOUTHAMPTON AC javelin thrower Freya Jones made a welcome return to home soil – and struck silver in the Sainsbury’s British Championships in Birmingham.

The 21-year-old from Chandler’s Ford flew back from the University of Georgia, USA, to compete at the Alexander Stadium and briefly led the competition with a third round throw of 53.38.

That effort was eclipsed by north Devon’s Izzy Jeffs who pipped Jones to gold by just 12 centimetres.

Jones, who boasts a personal best of 55.36 metres, currently leads the 2015 UK senior women’s rankings with a 54.11-metre throw achieved in Eugene, Oregon last month.

A former Thornden School and Barton Peveril College student, Jones was coached by throws specialist Bill Bushnell in Southampton before gaining a scholarship to the States, where she now trains with US throws icon Don Babbitt.

She represented England at last year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Jones's Southampton clubmate Sean Adams finished sixth in his 400m hurdles heat in Birmingham.
