FORMER heroin addict Aaron Ballard will be running the New Forest Marathon tomorrow – as he prepares for his record-breaking trek to the South Pole.

The Southampton-born 35-year-old is aiming to become the first Britain to solo ski unsupported to the South Pole next year.

His “Tent to Pole” Antarctic trek will set off from Puntas Arenas, Chile in December where Aaron will meet the film crew following his journey and depart for The Union Glacier, Antarctica.

What awaits is a 1,170km journey through one of the most hostile environments on earth facing temperatures of minus 50c, white out conditions and constant freezing winds.

Ballard said: “I got clean around eight years ago and haven’t looked back – and exercise has been crucial to maintaining my recovery.”

He will be walking for 12 hours a day only stopping for 10 minutes to replace some of the 8,000 calories that will be burnt.

Aaron will be faced with many varied conditions along the route such as frostbite, dehydration, exhaustion and sleep deprivation, providing the ultimate challenge.

Chris Farr, a co-founder of New Forest Marathon organisers ORA Events, said: “One of our passions is to inspire as many people as possible to be active and Aaron’s journey of recovery is living proof that anyone can turn things around via exercise.

“His determination to not only beat his addiction but to take such an inspirational challenge on is a lesson for us all.”

Andy Daish, also part of ORA Events, said: “It’s fantastic that the event can be used to help the whole community regardless of age, gender or background to achieve personal challenges and change lives.”

Aaron will be joined by a film crew for every step of the 26.2 miles.

There will also be a half marathon as well as 10k, 5k and junior races.

The race begins at New Park Showground, Brockenhurst on Sunday morning, with musical entertainment and children’s activities happening on site.
