Savage Tri Club is celebrating its third birthday and a string of outstanding achievements from its athletes.

The burgeoning Southampton based triathlon club, headed by former Commonwealth Games competitor Dave Savage, has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2012 and is getting some impressive results.

Savage Tri have just had two of its athletes competing for Great Britain in the age group World Championship at Sprint and Olympic distance in Chicago.

Tom Budden finished 14th, and first Brit, in the Olympic distance in the male 35-39 age category.

Stuart McInnes was racing at sprint distance in the 30-34 division. “It has been absolutely incredible,” said McInnes.

“As an amateur athlete - and in particular one who is new to the sport - the opportunity to represent your country, rub shoulders with the best triathletes in the world and compete in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the USA is simply indescribable.”

Leanne Watters took part in the ETU European Championships Standard distance triathlon in Geneva in the 25-29 age group, and is already targeting a spot in the 2017 Euros.

“Racing as part of the GB Age group team was both an unbelievable and unforgettable experience,” reflected Watters. “It wasn’t until race day when I was on the cycle leg that it hit me, everyone racing was wearing their countries kit, what an experience and what an achievement.

“Since joining Savage Tri my times have improved, my confidence has grown and I’ve made some amazing friends. Savage Tri is so much more than a tri club, it’s the extra support outside the sessions, the new ideas, the encouragement and the people that make Savage Tri so special.”

Andy Smith, a coach at Savage Tri, was racing closer to home in Weymouth, coming 11th in his age group in the ETU Long Distance championships.

The club’s head coach, Dave Savage, said: “I'm extremely proud of these four club members for achieving international recognition. It's the pinnacle, what they've trained so hard for and fully deserve to be on such a stage.

“Whilst Stuart, Leanne, Andy and Tom have had their skills tested on the international stage, we are most definitely a club containing a range of abilities. Every member’s achievements get celebrated regardless.

“Very often we have to conquer obstacles just to make it the start line. Our club members are simply an amazing bunch of people who never cease to amaze me with their enthusiasm, positivity, camaraderie and a willingness to better themselves.

“They are all winners in my eyes and make me extremely proud.

As part of the third birthday celebrations the club are also giving readers the chance to get active and join for two months of totally free training. To take advantage of this offer simply click here and fill out the form.
