KELLY Simm has got the news she has worked so hard for.

The 20-year-old Dynamo School of Gymnastics star from Whiteley has made the Great Britain women’s team for the World Championships in Glasgow next week (October 23-November 1).

After a gruelling round of five trials and training four days a week for five weeks, Simm – a student at Southampton Solent University – will head to Scotland with her coach Keith Richardson who has also been selected to travel along with the team.

This will be no ordinary World Championships. With the OIympics just around the corner in Rio next year, the GB team must finish in the top eight to pin down an automatic place for Brazil.

Once this first step has been achieved, the top eight teams will compete for the World Championships title. Within that, the top eight highest scorers on each of the four pieces of apparatus get to compete for the respective individual titles.

Richardson, head coach at Dynamo’s gymnastics facility at Hamble Community Sports College, said: “Kelly has worked so hard since winning the all around World University Games title and confidence is high. We are keen to see her on the world stage for Great Britain in Glasgow.”

Simm, along with Claudia Fragapane, Rebecca Downie and Ruby Harrold were all part of the England team which won Commonwealth Gold at the same Glasgow venue in 2014. They have all been selected again, along with Ellie Downie and Amy Tinkler.

Britain's women’s head coach Amanda Reddin said: “The British girls are fully prepared and ready to aim for Rio.

"The girls we have selected blend a mix of great experience with some younger faces who have already proven themselves in major championships.

"For Becky, Claudia, Ruby and Kelly it’s a return to the Hydro Arena where they’ve all experienced great successes last summer, and these girls all competed at last year’s World Championships where the team placed sixth in China.

"For Amy and Ellie this is their first World Championships but both showed at the European Championships that they can excel at this level.

"We’re all excited to get to Glasgow and begin the competitions knowing that we will have amazing support from the home crowd who can help give us that extra edge as we fight for Olympic places.”
