IT was a brilliant weekend for Southampton Athletics Club both on home soil and abroad.

Talented all-rounder Amaya Scott marked her England Schools' debut by finishing third in the Indoor Pentathlon Home International at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena, while up-and-coming distance prospect Mo Mahamed was part of the Great Britain junior men’s bronze medal-winning team at the European Cross-Country Championships in Hyeres, France.

Having qualified by finishing fourth under-16 at the England Schools’ Combined Events Championships, Scott raised her game to amass 3,537 points in Glasgow and crown what has been a breakthrough year for the Romsey schoolgirl.

She started the day with 5.29 metres in the long jump - her second best ever, improving her indoor personal best (pb) by over 50cm.

Scott then ran a pb of 9.69 secs over the 60m hurdles and posted the day’s joint best age-group high jump of 1.66m. A monster 12.17m shot put followed, smashing her previous best, and she signed off with a huge indoor pb of 2.33 secs in the 800m.

All told, it was a near 500-point improvement on her previous best when she finished fifth in the British Indoor Under-15 Championships in March.

Mahamed’s mission in France was always going to be a tough one with four of the first five from last year still competing in the junior age-group.

He kept pace with the leaders early on and was eventually the fourth Briton home in 22nd on his GB debut.

Britain’s four scoring athletes amassed 67 points, ensuring Mahamed brought a medal home to Southampton. Hopefully he will get a chance to add to that next year when he will still be a junior.

To complete a memorable weekend for the red-and-white stripes, several under-11 athletes achieved cross-country glory.

Megan Hulbert (girls), Ben Brown (boys) and the SAC girls’ team were triumphant in the Wessex League.

Brown and Hulbert also won their respective Dorset County Championships titles. The top three girls’ places were filled by Southampton athletes with Maria Lanza and Annie Mann following Hulbert home.
